In 2018, Marc Khafre created EARTH HEART, a limited charity T-shirt release launched on Earth Day. Produced entirely in London, where the artist was living and working at the time, each shirt was cut, sewn and finished by hand from pure organic cotton. The garments were then locally hand-printed using water-based ink.
The project was both artwork and protest. Conceived as a response to the plastic waste crisis, EARTH HEART highlighted the contradiction at the core of fashion retail, where most T-shirts arrive to stores individually wrapped in plastic bags. By presenting a garment free from synthetic fibers and petroleum-based inks, the work symbolized a return to material honesty and ecological responsibility rooted in local craft.
The campaign imagery was photographed by Marc in Cape Verde, an island marked by relentless tides of plastic waste washed ashore by the Atlantic. Juxtaposing the purity of the handmade garment with landscapes overwhelmed by pollution, the work made visible the urgency of ending plastic’s domination over both fashion and the natural world.
